Why is Port 25 Blocked?

Why can you no longer send email through an email server other than mail.andycable.com or why are we blocking port 25?

Effective 10/13/2005, port 25 was blocked.  Traffic coming from port 25 has been blocked from leaving our network.  This is how spam is relayed. Since ISP’s more prevalently use black hole lists as a way to combat SPAM, spammers/virus writers are now including mass mailers in common exploits. This  simply means that if your computer is infected with a virus, or a backdoor, it could be used to send SPAM. Recently we have had a rash of IP address being listed in RBL around the internet as SPAM addresses. This will cause an interruption in email service for whoever happens to have that particular IP address.  It can be a difficult problem to resolve at times and can cause frustration with the customer who can no longer send email because either they (or someone who had that address before them) had a nasty Trojan horse virus that spit out SPAM for someone else.

Most customers will not be affected by Port 25 blocking and will not need to change any email settings. However, all customers who are not using mail.andycable.com as their outgoing email server or have a homebrew mail server will be affected by this change.  Simply change the outgoing SMTP server to mail.andycable.com.
